Interview With Thomas Newman
Well it’s the interview you all have been waiting for! We had the great pleasure to sit down with the writer, producer and director of the upcoming feature length zombie movie, Bong of the Dead, Thomas Newman and the following are his answers.
For those that don’t already know, Bong of the Dead is a creation of the warped mind of Thomas Newman. The blood and gore was put to full effect with the FX guru Mike Fields who is a veteran of every major gore and horror movie of note as of late.
Bong Of The Dead is a comical road adventure about two close friends who find a way to make the best of a mass zombie outbreak caused by meteorites from outer space. Tommy and Edwin are a pair of major stoners who one day discover a way of using zombie brains as a means of growing potent pot. Now that the world is abandoned and there are flesh eating monsters at every turn what more can one do except find a way to benefit from it. The boys manage to deplete their supply of weed and decide to take a road trip in search of more zombies in order to kill them and use their brains for fertilizer. Along the way they find themselves hostages to a psychotic zombie who has an evil plot to take over the world.
Since the outbreak Alex happens to be a rare zombie capable of speech and meticulous plotting. Slowly he tries to raise an army of the undead in hopes of one day ruling the earth and wiping out the human population of survivors. Once the boys find a way to temporarily escape his clutches, they quickly find their way onto a farm where they become friends with Leah Kroaker, another lone survivor. Together they build an indestructible zombie mulching machine and take on Alex and his army of the undead in a battle royal. During the filming of the battle sequence over 800 gallons of blood were used in a period of one day to capture the gore. This film has comedy, action, adventure and an original plot line that has never been done before! It is Cheech and Chong or Harold and Kumar meets Shaun of the Dead. Zombie movie fans will not be disappointed!
The following is our interview with Thomas Newman
1) Q. Why did you decide to do a Zombie film with weed?
I’m a big fan of Cheech & Chong and Harold and Kumar and of course every zombie film ever made! I thought it would be cool and funny to combine something like Shaun of the Dead and Harold and Kumar.
2) Q. What were your biggest challenges?
It was very tough to try and do an entire film for $15K and make it look like a couple million instead. I believe I definitely achieved that. I made sure that I story boarded every scene, shot for shot so that my film would have more of my style to it, rather than a bunch of hand held footage thrown together because it would be easier.
3) Q. What are your expectations of Bong Of The Dead?
I expect people to see what I was able to do with $15K in 15 days and only one camera which I constantly had to move and reposition in order to make it appear that I had multiple cameras. I mainly hope to get studio attention in hopes of launching my career to the next level. I really hope to get picked up by Trouble maker Studios which of course is Robert Rodriguez’s company.
