Top Box Office Hit Zombie Movies

Who does not love watching a horror movie with a lot of dead characters moving from one place to another at the pace of a turtle? I surely love that sight. It not only gives you chills, but also can add the one thing that such movie needs: SCARY. White Zombie Productions were the first ones to come out with first of such movies and they were well-received by the movie-going public at large. Fans could not get enough of the zombie horror movie.

Since the release of ‘Dead Man Working in the Cane Field’, the production has never looked back. There has been a huge count of movies, which became a part of Zombie movie history, but few of them entered records for becoming the top grossed movies in such genre. Here are few of such zombie movies.

1. Dawn of the Dead – This zombie movie was directed and written by George A. Romero. David Emge, Scott H. Reiniger, Ken Foree and Gaylen Ross played the lead roles in the movie. The reviews of the movie were positive from the day of its release. The story is about four survivors, who take shelter in an isolated shopping mall. For security against the zombies, they lock the mall and eventually destroy all the zombies. The movie grossed a whooping USD 55m, even though there was an investment of only USD 1.5m.

2. Night of the Living Dead – It is yet another Zombie movie, released in 1968 under the direction of George A. Romero, which received a lot of cash alongside popularity across US. The movie starred Judith O’Dea, Karl Hardman, Marilyn Eastman and Duane Jones. The story is about a night when the dead gets alive and come out to curb their desire to eat human flesh. The movie has, till date, grossed USD 42m.

3. Day of the Dead – This was another movie directed by George A. Romero. It was released in 1985. It starred Terry Alexander, Anthony Dileo Jr., Joseph Pilato and John Amplas. The story, continuing from the Dawn of the Dead, is about scientists and military officials, who reside in a bunker in Florida. It is the only region that is not ruled by the zombies. The scientists have been using the dead military officials for their experiments. When the military officials come to know of that, then hell breaks lose. The movie, in US only, grossed USD 34m.

4. Evil Dead – This movie was out for viewers in 1981. It was directed by Sam Raimi and starred Bruce Campbell, Betsy Baker and Ellen Sandweiss. The story revolves around five college friends, who go for a vacation in a forest area that has been isolated for years. The vacations turns into a horror ride when they find some tapes that release evil prints. This movie had to face a lot of controversy related to the effects, which were terrifying. In the beginning, not even a single distributor said yes for this in US. However, a European distributor brought it for the public viewership and made the right decision, as the movie has grossed around USD 30m in US only.

5. Resident Evil – This is one of the most recent movies to hit the scene and was released in 2002. It was written and directed by Paul W. S. Anderson. The movie starred Milla Jovovich, Eric Mabius and Michelle Rodriguez playing the lead. The story of the movie was based on a deadly T-virus that can convert humans into flesh eating zombies. For a budget of only USD 33m, the movie was able to gross more than USD 100m from different parts of the world.
